| About Dogs In Motion’s founder: Patti Triola, PT, CCRT I graduated from Northern Illinois University and became a licensed Physical Therapist in 1991. I've been an animal lover (having had dogs, cats, birds, etc.) my entire life. Up until 1994, these were just two separate passions and had my dog, Chelsea, not fractured her ulna, they may have remained that way. In an effort to help my dog return to normal pain-free function, I began talking to veterinarians and applying the same rehabilitation techniques that have been used on humans for years. From that point on, I started combining my love for animals and my passion for physical therapy. My home, post college graduation, has also been filled with dogs, mostly rescued Dachshunds with disk disease. Over the years, I’ve talked with many veterinarians, surgeons and neurologists, read available information and received advanced training to learn canine anatomy, physiology, neurology, etc. and how to apply the same concepts of rehabilitation to canines who are aging, ill, injured or who have undergone surgery. After 11 years of rehabilitating dogs, I formed Dogs In Motion, In Home Canine Rehabilitation & Wellness in May of 2005 to meet the need for affordable Canine Rehabilitation services to be offered within the comfort and convenience of the client's home. In January of 2006, I was appointed to American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Animal PT Special Interest Group as the Illinois State Liaison to facilitate the working relationship between Illinois Veterinary Medicine and Physical Therapy. I’ve taken the initiative to consult with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR), the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA), the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), the Illinois Physical Therapy Association (IPTA) and the legal counsel of Gerald Goldberg of Goldberg & Frankenstein LLC to obtain the clearest understanding and interpretation of the Illinois Veterinary and Physical Therapy practice acts to help educate veterinarians, physical therapists interested in canine rehabilitation, and dog owners on the growing popularity and need for canine rehabilitation as a routine component in the overall care and well being of the canine. In February of 2006, I became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT), one of only three Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapists / Practitioners in Illinois. I received my certification from the Animal Rehabilitation Institute (ARI) in Florida under the instruction of Jan Van Dyke, DVM (FL), Christine Zink, DVM, PhD (MD), Laurie Edge-Hughes, BScPT (Canada) and Laurie McCauley, DVM (IL). In October 2006, I formed the Suburban Chicagoland Dachshund Lovers (SCDL) a “members only” dachshund social group open to anyone who loves dachshunds / mixes. We have over 133 members and over 230 dachshunds. We are the only social dachshund group in the Chicagoland area to require Proof of Vaccinations to ensure that safety and fun go hand in paw!!! Included in our scheduled monthly activities was guest speaker Dr. Aaron Jackson, a surgeon at Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Northbrook (and owner of 2 dachshund / min pin mixes), at our March 11, 2007 fundraiser for Midwest Dachshund Rescue (MWDR). Dr. Jackson spoke on the topic of Dachshunds and Intervertebral Disk Disease. We raised over $8,128.54 for MWDR. Suburban Chicagoland Dachshund Lovers In October 2006, I joined Dodger’s List an online community that helps inform dachshund owners and others about both traditional and alternative treatments available for dogs with IVDD. I contributed an article entitled “Living and Working with Intervertebral Disk Disease” for the December 2006 edition of their newsletter, Dodger’s Digest. Dodger's List In November 2006, I created a new home on Yahoo Groups for VetRehab, a “members only” group for Veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Osteopaths and Chiropractors interested in veterinary rehabilitation. This group was founded by Dr. Laurie McCauley in 2001 and was formerly known as VetPT on SmartGroups up until late 2006. Together Dr. McCauley and I maintain the site which has grown to over 280 member from various regions of the world. VetRehab |
